Opportunities for Volunteers & Work Groups
Helping Honduras Kids recruits volunteers who have a burning desire, appropriate talents, and some background & experience with children, to help make a positive difference in the lives of impoverished Honduran children.
You may be interested to know that just about everyone at HHK is a volunteer with the only exceptions being our Honduran schoolteachers, dentist and the Honduran laborers who work on our construction projects.
HHK prefers volunteers age 20 years and older. We welcome volunteers from all over the world and have hosted volunteers from many countries. Most typically our volunteers come from the USA, Europe and Canada.
We are particularly interested in long-term volunteers, but we also accept those who can only contribute for a few weeks or months.
The Helping Honduras Kids programs are in the vibrant
La Ceiba area of the north coast of Honduras. The jungle rivers of the Pico Bonito National Forest and the sun and sand of the Caribbean are only 15 minutes away. La Ceiba has an airport, a bus station and more taxis than anyone can count! It also has internet cafes, ATM machines and excellent medical care.
Volunteers can live with local families or in small, inexpensive hostels. Some Spanish speaking ability is normally required and there is a good Spanish immersion program here in La Ceiba that can help you prepare for your work with the children. HHK volunteers pay their own traveling and incidental expenses. As these are volunteer positions, there is no salary. Often volunteers obtain grants from universities or foundations to pay for their travel. We can generally be flexible in accommodating your preferred starting date.
Volunteers can enter Honduras on a tourist visa that is renewed every 90 days. Approval to work in the country is not required as this is a non-salaried position.
There are many projects underway that will need coordination, planning and labor. Please see our Projects page if you are interested in helping us.
Helping Honduras Kids needs and welcomes work teams/groups to help us build and improve the various buildings where we carry out our programs. Medical and dental assistance is invaluable to us and to the children we care for.
Engineers Without Borders, Medical Brigades, Religious Groups, Student teams, etc. are all invited to contact us for further information.
Since volunteers will be working with children, we retain the right to terminate the services of anyone insensitive to the children’s emotional and physical situation or not meeting ethical and moral standards.
