Helping Honduras Kids (HHK) has many programs that are active or in the planning stages. Please visit the Projects page for a more detailed description of these projects.

Funds are needed to operate a Jungle School and kindergarden recently built  that is 15 minutes into the mountains behind La Ceiba, in the Cangrejal River Watershed. This school serves about 45 children who live in isolated mountain areas, and who will walk to classes on jungle paths. One 4-yr-old girl walks 2 hours each way on a narrow, slippery path to come to our Saturday morning kindergarden. Sponsorships will keep the 45 children supplied with clothing, medicines, vitamins, personal items, uniforms and school supplies. We bring in volunteers to teach at this school and currently have a full time teacher to teach the children English and computer skills, art and music.

All materials and supplies for this project are carried by mules and horses up the trail to the site. We ask for your support in sponsoring children at the Jungle School at $25/child/month.
The school children will be in grades 1-6. Please help us by sponsoring one of these beautiful children or making a donation. Photos of the kids are on the
Jungle School page.

Helping Honduras Kids is presently helping 4 Grandmas who are looking after children for a variety of reasons, including the death of the parents due to AIDS. Two of these Grandmas live in the beach town of El Porvenir and between them they are looking after 25 children. One Grandma in the mountain village of El Naranjo has 9 children. The needs of these children are many in order to feed, house, clothe, educate them, and to provide them love.

It is preferable to try and keep these children together in their communities rather than put them in institutions. Theirs is a extremely precarious life. We are providing food, clothing, school supplies, vitamins, medicines, personal items, toys and soon English and computer classes for the older children and basic reading and writing classes for the younger children. We are also planning to build some small concrete homes for the Porvenir children and their Grandmas, as they live in borrowed houses on borrowed land.

Grandma's Kids page.

We are also running a dental clinic in the public school in the mountain village of El Naranjo and funds are needed to keep this clinic open and free to the thousands of children in the area, who otherwise would have no dental care.

East of La Ceiba, in the village of Agua Caliente, we have opened a Children's Home (orphanage) called Hogar de Amor for children in the care of IHNFA, the government child welfare and family agency. These are children determined to be at "social risk" who have been removed from an undesirable environment and who are awaiting placement in a permanent orphanage. This is a very vulnerable time in the life of these children, and they may stay up to a year in this care, while the required legal processes are carried out. This program is being conducted in partnership with the Lisa Lopes Foundation, in a new 10,000 sq ft building.

In the beach town of El Porvenir, HHK plans to build and operate a nutrition and day care center for the children of poor families working in the pineapple fields. Honduras has now surpassed Haiti in the incidence of malnourished children, and a nutritious daily meal and vitamins and medical care will help these children to reach their full potential.

We invite you to visit us at these program sites in Honduras and experience a real wilderness adventure, and to contribute your time, effort, ideas, suggestions and fundraising activities to make this happen for many deserving disadvantaged children.

In summary, the programs that require funding are as follows:

1. Operation of our Children's Home orphanage (Hogar de Amor) for children coming out of the care of IHNFA (welfare agency)

2. Sponsorship for children at the HHK Children's Home at $25/child/month (please specify the age and gender (boy/girl) of the child you wish to sponsor.

3. Operating costs for the HHK Jungle School in the Cangrejal river basin

4. Sponsorship for children at the HHK “Jungle School” at $25/child/month (please specify the age and gender (boy/girl) of the child you wish to sponsor.

5. Sponsorship of Grandma's Kids at $25/child/month (please specify the age and gender (boy/girl) of the child you wish to sponsor.

6. Operation of a Dental Clinic in the public school in the mountain village of El Naranjo.

Please consider funding these projects and/or sponsoring a child to better the lives of disadvantaged children in Honduras. Our goal is to provide a brighter future for these children. Indicate the project you wish to support and/or the details on the child you wish to sponsor.

Please see our
Projects page for a list of projects that currently need funding and for more detail and our Volunteer page on how you can help!
